2025 Composer-in-Residence
Ben Nobuto is a British/Japanese composer based in London.
Described as ‘utterly contemporary’ (Manchester Collective) and ‘sonically dazzling’ (RPS Awards), his music often explores themes of attention and fragmentation, drawing from internet culture and popular idioms in a playful, ironic and surreal manner.
Previous collaborations include works for the BBC Proms, Manchester Collective, Nonclassical, National Youth Choir, BBC Singers and Colin Currie Quartet. He is currently working towards a debut album with the support of Sound and Music’s New Voices scheme, which is set to release in 2026.
Ben was recently the subject of a feature in Classical Music magazine, and you can read the full feature on their website here.

"[Ben Nobuto's prize-winning new work] is a sonically dazzling tour de force, tantalising the listener with its bold tapestry of writing for strings, percussion and electronics. It’s a cutting-edge contemporary work commissioned by Manchester Collective, and acutely reflective of now. Each arresting note makes it one of the stand-out pieces of the year."
